He goes through the garbage cans on rue des Beaux-arts, not only to find sustenance but also materials for his art. In the afternoon, he paints on the banks of the Seine. Sometimes an art student stops in front of his work, amazed. When evening draws in, Maurice washes his oilcloth canvas in the river.
